Discerning Difficult Decisions

Seeking Your Input for Our Upcoming Sermon Series on Discernment

One of the most common and most challenging statements in Christianity is the statement "this is God's will" or “it is the will of God.”  We see an example of this in Romans 12:1-2, where the Apostle Paul writes "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." In this passage, what does the Apostle Paul mean by will of God and how are we to discern that?

This May we will be starting a new sermon series, The Quad: Discerning Difficult Decisions. This series will focus on discernment - how we approach making tough decisions in challenging situations. Each week we will use the Wesleyan Quadrilateral to work through a difficult decision.

My hope is this series is as relevant and helpful as possible, so I would love to hear what topics and decisions you struggle to make the most.

Specifically, I would like to hear from you about:

  • What are the biggest questions and challenges you face related to discernment?

  • Do you struggle with knowing how to discern God's will in a particular situation?

  • How do you deal with conflicting opinions or opposing viewpoints when trying to make a difficult decision?

  • Are there specific life situations where you have found it especially challenging to discern the best course of action?
